Slip Agent

Polyolefin films tend to adhere to themselves (film-to-film) and metal surfaces (film-to-metal) due to their high coefficient of friction (COF). For easy processing, polyolefin films need around 0.2 COF.

Slip agent additives are used to reduce friction between films and between film and converting equipment, which improves movement through extrusion lines and downstream packaging operations and enhances processing or end applications.

Fatty acid amides, including primary and secondary amides, are the most commonly used slip additives. Similar to external lubricants, they migrate or bloom to the surface where they form a microcrystalline structure that decreases friction. Primary, unsaturated fatty acid amides such as Erucamide and Oleamide migrate quickly and are the most efficient slip agents for polyolefins. Secondary amides, for example, oleyl palmitate, are less volatile at higher process temperatures with very slow migration rates. They may be used in multilayer films and in engineering plastics. Slip additives can be used in polymer film structures and plastic packaging to improve polymer processing and in-use properties and are a practical requirement for both the manufacturer and end-product consumer.

Difference between amide slip agent

Additive Melting Point Migration Speed (Slip Rate) Thermal Stability Primary Role & Strengths
Oleamide ~68–76°C Fastest Low Immediate slip; fast COF reduction in PE/PP
Erucamide ~78–85°C Medium-Fast Good ~240°C Industry standard film slip agent & cap lubricant
Stearamide ~98–105°C Slow-Medium High Mold release, internal lubricant, antiblock
Behenamide ~108–115°C Very Slow Very High High-temp antiblock; zero impact on printability
Octadecyl Erucamide ~72–78°C Controlled / Slow Excellent (>300°C) High-temp slip; non-blooming, print/seal friendly
Ethylene Bis Oleamide (EBO) ~115–125°C Slow / Internal Very High (>280°C) High-temp lubricant, anti-tack, mold release
